Potato shippers are cautiously optimistic that yields won’t go through the roof like they did in 2009, and that markets can return to the more sustainable levels of recent years. In Washington and Oregon, potato shippers and officials also are banking on another big year for exports to help speed movement and buoy demand. A new agreement that allows fresh U.S. spuds into Vietnam couldn’t have come at a better time, said Matt Harris, trade director for the Moses Lake-based Washington State Potato Commission.
